In a notable philanthropic gesture, El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele has contributed two Bitcoins, valued at approximately $133,000, to support an initiative aimed at constructing 1,000 schools in Honduras.
The donation was presented to Shin Fujiyama, a prominent philanthropist and founder of the organization Students Helping Honduras, which focuses on alleviating poverty through educational opportunities. Bukele, recognized for his proactive promotion of cryptocurrency—particularly Bitcoin—has been instrumental in efforts to enhance the economy of El Salvador.
Currently undertaking a charity run spanning 3,000 kilometers to raise funds for the school project, Fujiyama expressed heartfelt gratitude to President Bukele in a video message, where he thanked the leader for his generous contribution.
Since designating Bitcoin as legal tender in El Salvador in 2021, Bukele has emerged as a passionate advocate for its adoption, aiming to incorporate it into daily life and leverage it for transformative social initiatives. Despite encountering some obstacles related to Bitcoin’s integration within the country, Bukele remains steadfast in his vision, having recently reiterated his commitment to purchasing one Bitcoin daily.
This latest donation underscores Bukele’s broader ambition of utilizing Bitcoin as a catalyst for economic growth and humanitarian efforts. As the value of Bitcoin continues to appreciate, this contribution is expected to significantly impact Honduran communities, fostering educational advancement and opportunity.
