Truth for the Commoner (TFTC), a media company that promotes bitcoin and sound money principles through newsletters and podcasts, has launched a browser extension called “Opportunity Cost”. This extension allows users to view online prices in bitcoin (BTC) or satoshis, helping them make purchasing decisions.
TFTC founder Marty Bent pointed out that distorted price signals from fiat currencies have undermined the ability to make rational economic calculations. He believes that bitcoin re – introduces a proper hurdle rate, enabling individuals to truly assess the opportunity cost of their spending decisions. The “Opportunity Cost” extension has three main goals. First, it aims to promote low – time – preference behavior, encouraging users to defer present consumption to meet future needs. Second, it hopes to increase bitcoin adoption by making it easier for people to think about prices and financial decisions in BTC. Third, it provides a tool for business owners to calculate revenue denominated in BTC.
The browser extension is user – friendly and privacy – focused. It operates locally within the browser, without collecting or sending browsing data to external servers. The only external data it uses is the bitcoin – to – fiat price conversion, which ensures user privacy while providing real – time pricing information. Users can choose to display prices in either BTC or satoshis and set their preferred reference currency. The extension supports multiple currencies, including USD, EUR, GBP, JPY, and CNY. It also offers flexible display options, such as a dual – display mode that shows both fiat and bitcoin prices side – by – side, and a bitcoin – only mode that replaces fiat prices entirely.
The “Opportunity Cost” extension is currently available for Chrome and is expected to be available for Firefox soon. It is an open – source software with its code available on GitHub, welcoming community contributions and improvements. This extension is part of TFTC’s broader effort to promote bitcoin education and adoption through various tools, products, and services.
