The Vatican Library has embarked on a groundbreaking initiative in partnership with NTT DATA Italia, leveraging blockchain technology to safeguard its extensive collection of manuscripts.
Announced on June 17, the “Vatican Library Web3 Support Project” aims to enhance the library’s digital presence and foster community involvement through innovative technological solutions.
NTT DATA Italia extended the experimental project, originally launched in Japan in February 2023, to Italy in collaboration with Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana.
The Vatican Library houses a treasure trove of approximately 180,000 manuscripts and more than 1.5 million printed books. As part of the initiative, the library has introduced non-fungible tokens (NFTs) to engage donors and social media users. Initially accessible to residents of Italy, participants who shared the NFT project on social media by July 16 received a “Silver NFT,” granting them access to high-resolution images of a selected collection of 15 manuscripts. Contributors who financially supported the project received a more exclusive “Gold NFT,” providing access to high-resolution images of all 21 manuscripts in the collection.
Since its inception, the project has distributed 419 Polygon-based NFTs, marking a significant milestone in showcasing blockchain’s efficacy in preserving cultural heritage. These NFTs are soulbound, ensuring they are non-transferable and permanently linked to the recipient’s digital wallet.
The Vatican Library, renowned for its historical significance dating back to the 14th century, has continually sought to enhance accessibility to its ancient texts. In recent years, efforts have included the launch of a new website in 2020 featuring enhanced search capabilities and easier access to digital reproductions of manuscripts and archival materials.
Looking ahead, the library’s future plans may incorporate immersive extended reality (XR) experiences such as augmented or virtual reality, further advancing its mission to preserve and promote cultural heritage.
NTT DATA Italia, a longstanding partner of the Vatican Library since 2014 through its digital archive service AMLAD, underscores its commitment to the digital future with substantial investments in web3 infrastructure. The company is poised to launch a crypto wallet later this year, solidifying its role in pioneering technological advancements within the cultural preservation landscape.
The “Vatican Library Web3 Support Project” stands as a testament to the transformative potential of blockchain technology in preserving historical artifacts while engaging a global audience in their appreciation and protection.
