China’s National Immigration Administration has announced a new travel permit policy for residents in specific areas of Guangdong. This policy will make it easier for people in Shenzhen and Hengqin to visit Hong Kong and Macao.
Starting this Sunday, residents of Shenzhen’s Special Economic Zone can visit Hong Kong without any limits. They will have the freedom to travel as often as they like. For those living in Hengqin, a new permit will allow them to travel to Macao without restrictions starting in January. This permit will be valid for one year, with each visit lasting up to seven days.
Additionally, residents of Zhuhai Special Economic Zone will soon be able to apply for a permit to visit Macao once a week. This permit will also allow stays of up to seven days per visit, starting next year.
These changes, approved by the State Council, aim to enhance travel and economic ties between Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Hengqin, Hong Kong, and Macao. Hong Kong’s chief executive, John Lee Ka-chiu, expressed gratitude to the central government for its support. He noted that these new measures will greatly benefit Hong Kong’s tourism and retail sectors.
Eric Chan Kwok-ki, Hong Kong’s chief secretary for administration, has directed all departments to prepare for the influx of visitors. They will work together to ensure that transportation and tourism facilities are ready.
Experts believe that these new permits will stimulate the tourism market in Macao and benefit various industries, including hospitality and retail. Peng Peng, from the Guangdong Society of Reform, highlighted that improved connections between Macao and Hengqin will create job opportunities and attract talent to the region. These developments will promote closer collaboration between Macao and Hengqin.
