Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s decision to leave the Trump administration has caused a strong stir within the Government Efficiency Division (DOGE). A former DOGE employee said in his first media interview after leaving that with Musk’s departure, the DOGE project is likely to come to a standstill.
Musk announced on Wednesday evening that he would end his status as a special government employee. Although he insisted that DOGE would continue to operate, the voices from within the department were quite different. According to insiders, this ambitious project aimed at cutting $2 trillion in federal spending has achieved far from expectations in reality, saving only about $175 billion. Moreover, these statistics have many loopholes, which cannot help but raise questions about the effectiveness of the project.
Sahil Lavi, a software engineer who worked at DOGE for nearly two months, even made a pessimistic prediction. Ravengia, who was fired earlier this month, told Reuters that the DOGE project “was like the wailing of a dying struggle”. He believes that “the core charm of this project lies in Musk himself”, and after Musk’s departure, DOGE employees will “gradually stop working, just like children joining a start-up company that will go bankrupt in four months”. Ravengia’s perspective reflects the DOGE project’s high reliance on Musk personally. Musk has played a crucial role in project advancement, resource coordination, and team cohesion.
Looking back on the progress of the DOGE project, Musk, with his significant influence in the business field and innovative ideas, attracted a lot of attention and also provided impetus for the initial launch and development of the project. However, with Musk’s departure, the future direction of the project is full of uncertainties. On the one hand, without a core leader, the project may encounter many difficulties in aspects such as strategic decision-making and resource allocation. On the other hand, the frustration of employees’ confidence in the project may lead to a decline in work enthusiasm and a reduction in team collaboration efficiency.
At present, the US government has not made a clear statement on the future development direction of the DOGE project. The subsequent fate of this project is not only related to the optimization of the government’s fiscal expenditure, but also will become an important window for observing the policy adjustment and project promotion capabilities within the US government. In the coming period, whether DOGE will continue to operate smoothly as Musk claimed or collapse as predicted by former employees will remain closely watched by the market and the public.
