In a recent conversation with prominent podcaster Lex Fridman, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized that the global artificial intelligence (AI) revolution would be incomplete without India’s involvement. He argued that India’s growing presence in the AI sector is pivotal for its success on the global stage.
During the nearly two-and-a-half-hour discussion, Modi confidently asserted, “Can anyone develop AI entirely on their own?” and stressed, “No matter what the world does with AI, it will remain incomplete without India.” Drawing parallels with India’s swift adoption of 5G technology, he highlighted how India had once been seen as lagging behind in technological advancements. However, once the country set its sights on 5G, it quickly became the fastest nation to roll out comprehensive 5G networks globally.
Modi pointed out that India is not just focusing on theoretical AI models but is also developing practical, AI-driven applications for specific use cases. This includes creating accessible platforms that ensure GPU resources are available to all segments of society, establishing a unique marketplace-based model for broader AI accessibility.
The Prime Minister also shared an anecdote from a conversation with an American tech executive, who revealed that engineering job postings in the U.S. rarely fill a room, whereas in India, even a football field wouldn’t be enough to accommodate applicants. Modi proudly noted, “India has access to an extraordinarily vast pool of talent, and that’s our greatest strength.” He emphasized that AI’s potential is entirely dependent on human intelligence, stating, “Artificial intelligence is fundamentally powered, shaped, and guided by human intelligence.”
When questioned about the fear of AI replacing humans, Modi dismissed the concern, referencing the historical trend where humanity has adapted to technological progress, always staying a step ahead. He further explained that AI’s true power lies in how it forces humanity to reflect on its own nature, especially the concept of work. Despite AI’s advances, Modi asserted, no technology can replicate the limitless creativity and imagination of the human mind.
Concluding his remarks, Modi underscored the essential human qualities of empathy and care, saying, “Humans have an innate ability to care for each other, the natural tendency to be concerned about one another. Now, can someone tell me, is AI capable of this?”
