According to the monitoring of the on – chain security analysis agency PeckShield, in May 2025, about 20 major cryptocurrency security incidents occurred globally, resulting in a total loss of $244.1 million, a month – on – month decrease of 39.29%. The specific situations are as follows:
The Largest Incident: The Cetus protocol suffered a loss of $220 million, which was the largest – scale incident in May. Currently, the Cetus protocol and SUI have successfully frozen $157 million of the stolen funds, and the remaining $63 million is still in the attacker’s wallet.
Other Major Incidents: The Cork protocol was attacked with a loss of $12 million. A hacking incident suspected of being related to North Korea caused a loss of $5.2 million. The MBU token and MaplestoryU suffered losses of $2.2 million and $1.2 million respectively.
In addition, in May 2025, cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase disclosed a serious cyber – attack incident. Hackers stole the data of approximately 1 million customers and demanded a ransom of $20 million not to disclose the information. Although Coinbase promptly discovered and fired the involved personnel, the data had already been leaked.
