On the afternoon of June 5th, the Ministry of Commerce held a regular press conference. A reporter asked questions about the new restrictive measures taken by the US against China.
He Yongqian, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Commerce, said that after the release of the “Joint Statement on the Geneva Economic and Trade Talks between China and the United States” on May 12, China, with a responsible attitude, has seriously treated and strictly fulfilled its obligations, and actively safeguarded the consensus reached at the Geneva Economic and Trade Talks. In contrast, the US side, after the Geneva talks, has adopted a series of restrictive measures against China, seriously undermining the existing consensus and seriously infringing upon China’s legitimate rights and interests. China is strongly dissatisfied with this and firmly opposes it, demanding that the US stop immediately. If the US side persists in its own way and continues to undermine China’s interests, China will resolutely take effective measures to safeguard its legitimate rights and interests.
Previously, after the economic and trade talks in Geneva, the US side successively introduced a number of discriminatory restrictive measures against China, including releasing guidelines for the export control of AI chips, halting the sale of chip design software (EDA) to China, and announcing the revocation of visas for Chinese students. These practices seriously violate the consensus reached by the heads of state of the two countries during the phone call on January 17th, seriously undermine the existing consensus of the Geneva economic and trade Talks, and seriously infringe upon China’s legitimate rights and interests. The US has unilaterally and continuously provoked new economic and trade frictions, intensifying the uncertainty and instability of bilateral economic and trade relations. Instead of reflecting on itself, it has turned around and unjustly accused China of violating the consensus. This is seriously contrary to the facts, and China firmly refuses unreasonable accusations.
The “Joint Statement on Economic and Trade Talks between China and the United States in Geneva” is an important consensus reached by both sides under the principles of mutual respect and equal consultation. The achievement has not come easily. China urges the US to work with China in the same direction, immediately correct the relevant wrong practices, jointly safeguard the consensus reached at the Geneva Economic and Trade Talks, and promote the healthy, stable and sustainable development of China-Us economic and trade relations.
