Golden Finance reported that Amazon announced a major investment plan on Wednesday, which will invest 10 billion US dollars to build a new data center in North Carolina. This measure is an important part of its efforts to expand artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing infrastructure.
In a statement, Amazon said that this large-scale investment is expected to consolidate new computationally intensive workloads and help enhance Amazon’s ability to support enterprises in building with AI. With the rapid development of AI applications worldwide, the demand for powerful computing capabilities and efficient data processing is also increasing day by day. Amazon aims to provide customers with more powerful cloud computing services by building new data centers, meeting their growing demands in areas such as AI research and development and big data analysis.
North Carolina Governor Josh Stein warmly welcomed this investment, noting: “Amazon’s investment is one of the largest in the state’s history and will bring hundreds of high-paying jobs and economic growth to Richmond County.” This investment is not only of great significance to Amazon’s own business expansion, but also will have a profound impact on the local economy. The construction process of the new data center will drive the development of related industries such as construction and equipment procurement, and create a large number of temporary jobs. After its completion and operation, it is expected to recruit engineers, network and security experts, as well as other technical positions, providing local residents with long-term, stable and high-paying job opportunities. At the same time, it will attract more related industries to gather and promote the diversified development of the regional economy.
David Zapolski, senior vice president of Global Public policy and Legal affairs at Amazon, said: “This investment demonstrates our commitment to driving innovation in cloud computing and AI technologies, which will make North Carolina a cutting-edge technology hub, create hundreds of high-skilled jobs and significantly boost economic growth.” This huge investment is expected to create 500 highly skilled jobs in the Amazon Web Services (AWS) data center supply chain sector. As part of its investment plan, Amazon also promised to collaborate with educational institutions in North Carolina to enhance training programs and practical learning opportunities in the data center industry, in order to cultivate more professional talents for the future.
From the perspective of the industry background, the current global data center market is in a stage of rapid development. According to data from Synergy Research Group, the number of large data centers operated by hyperscale operators had reached 1,136 by the end of 2024, more than doubling compared to 2019. The institution predicts that 130 to 140 new data centers will be added each year in the coming years. Amazon, Microsoft and Google currently dominate the global cloud service market, with the United States accounting for 54% of the total capacity of global data centers. With the explosive growth of enterprises’ demand for AI infrastructure construction, the average scale of data centers has shown a significant growth trend. Amazon’s investment in building data centers this time is also in line with the industry development trend and further consolidating its leading position in the fields of cloud computing and AI.
This is not the first time that Amazon has invested heavily in the construction of data centers. Previously, Amazon’s cloud computing division, AWS, has been accelerating the expansion of data centers worldwide. For instance, on December 18, 2024, AWS announced that it would invest an additional 10 billion US dollars to expand its data center in Ohio to meet the rapidly growing demand for cloud computing and generative artificial intelligence. In May 2025, Matt Garman, the CEO of AWS, disclosed that the company plans to establish new facilities in multiple regions such as Mexico, Chile and Saudi Arabia. In addition, AWS is also actively seeking cutting-edge technical support, especially NVIDIA’s latest AI chips, to enhance its AI computing capabilities and meet customers’ expectations for high-demand AI services.
This investment in building a data center in North Carolina is an important step in Amazon’s continuous layout in the fields of AI and cloud computing. Subsequently, the construction progress, commissioning time of the new data center, as well as its specific impact on the local economy and the competitive landscape of the industry, all deserve continuous attention. Whether Amazon can further widen the gap with its rivals in the AI and cloud computing market competition with this investment and provide better services to customers remains to be seen over time.
